Batwrangling

This is one of the common hallways in our 19th-century mill building.

Here's part of our space. The red dot near the ceiling above the ladder is where the  July 19th (2004) bat was when I caught it.

This skunk's skull is obligingly standing in for a bat: It's close to the size of a bat with its wings furled, and, because it's light, it shows up better in the net.

Here is the net flipped over onto itself to keep the "bat" in the net until I get it outside.
(It's important never to touch a bat or get close enough to get bitten by one. )

NB: For our safety (both mine and my chiroptera friends'), I never handle bats. I use a bird net (which I got at a bird show) to catch them. Then I bring them outside for release.
